What to Ask When Looking for A Plastic Surgeon

By David Carter

There are a few things that you must take into consideration when deciding to undergo a cosmetic procedure. You will find a lot of plastic surgeons in Dallas and it is very important for you to choose the right one. Do not rush when choosing a plastic surgeon. Come up with a list of potential plastic surgeons in Dallas and ask them the following questions prior to deciding whether to trust them with your plastic surgery in Dallas.

No. 1: The Basics

Start with the basic questions if you visit a clinic or have a preliminary consultation with a potential doctor. These questions include those involving the certifications, credentials or licenses they have - and how up-to-date they are. Ask the doctor if he or she is board certified. There isn't one particular certifying board for cosmetic surgeons - but if they've been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, then they have legitimate training in the field. However ABPS isn't the only board certification available. You can find certain lists for board-certified doctors online as well.

While on the subject of basic questions, you should also ask how many years of experience they have performing cosmetic procedures. How many procedures have they performed, and has one ever gone wrong?

No. 2: The Surgical Procedure

You will need to ask the doctor what all happens from start to finish. This includes pre-surgery, the actual procedure, and the rehab process. Ask him how he picks his team and inquire about their credentials. Have him give you a general schedule of the day of the surgery that way you can be better prepared. Be sure to ask about the rehab process as it will undoubtedly be an uncomfortable situation for a while and you should be fully prepared for the process.

No. 3: Possible Hazards

Make sure that you are well aware of the potential risks that come with undergoing plastic surgery in Dallas. These risks include infections, allergic reactions to anaesthesia, and other minor side effects. If you discuss these with your surgeon, it will reduce any worries you may have. Knowing these risks prior to undergoing surgery is better than finding it out later because you are experiencing it.

No. 4: Past patients or references

Plastic surgeons in Dallas usually have references available if you wish to be directed to one - these could be colleagues, other doctors, past patients, family members or friends - to help you make your decision. You can also ask to speak to a past patient of theirs who recommends their work, which will also give you a chance to see the work that doctor did on them (and whether or not you like it).

No. 5: The hospitals

Lastly, you should ask the surgeon where the surgery would take place. Some procedure will not be performed at a hospital. If your surgeon says that it will not be done in a hospital, ask them about their hospital privileges and which hospitals they have privileges for.

When asking these questions, take note of the answers they provide to you as well as how they communicated this with you. It is important that you feel comfortable discussing with them and that you are satisfied with the answers that they provide. If not, keep looking for a cosmetic surgeon. Pick the surgeon that make you feel most comfortable. Ask all the questions that you may have to remove all doubt prior to undergoing plastic surgery in Dallas.
