By Jenny Allison

It's as if one can expect that there's that option that if their marriage won't work out, they can easily just get a divorce and be done with it. With this mentality, marriage is slowly losing its value and true importance in people's lives.

The sad part of most divorce cases is when you try and get down to the root and cause of all the trouble, you realize it simply started from some petty fight which you and your spouse lost control of. Real trouble comes in once you let your pride and selfishness block whatever chances of reconciliation.

But once you slowly learn how to let your pride and self-serving beliefs leave your mind, it can never be too late to try and sort things out again with your spouse. It is important to look at the bigger picture and what you will be giving up just because from a petty fight that could've been resolved easily. So before things could go way out hand, it's perhaps time to exert a bit of effort in ways on how to save your marriage.

First step to consider on how to save your marriage is that as a married couple, you should make sure to spend some quality alone time together. Some alone time without all the hustle and stress of work, and just sit down together and engage in conversation. This time can be used to voice out whatever concerns each of you has and a time to calmly listen to what your spouse has to say.

Another possible step to take on how to save your marriage is to do something spontaneous for your spouse every day. It just has to be something little but something that your spouse wouldn't really expect from you. This could add a bit of spark and romance which long-time married couples tend to lose along the way. You can prepare your spouse's things, or breakfast in bed or even a simple note to make him/her smile for the day.

One of the most important aspect of marriage and basically every relationship is the ability to compromise and be selfless. Prioritizing your spouse's needs before your own is probably the most important way on how to save your marriage. Selflessness and sacrifice is one of the highest forms of love you can ever offer to your spouse.

But of course, it's not all about your spouse. An important aspect of knowing how to save your marriage is to not forget to love and value yourself as well. You must never lose sight of your identity apart from your spouse's and never forget your true worth. With this, your spouse is sure to recognize and respect your true worth as well.

Forcing and rushing things don't always prove beneficial. In trying to fix things, it is important to act slowly but surely, one step, one day at a time. You can't also force your spouse to change for you, just as you cannot be forced to change for him/her. What's important is to always keep the room for improvement open in order to make things work between you and your spouse.

Change begins with one step you take, one day at a time. You and your spouse will never have a perfect relationship simply because it does not exist. The best you can do is to have a perfectly imperfect marriage and make your journey together worth the ride.
